art + bbq = arteque

We had our 2nd annual Arteque this past weekend and it was SO MUCH FUN! We had a ton of little people running around playing and making art. Excellent! (Though no big people art..we will have to remedy that next year!) I think this is a really wonderful way to celebrate summer, good friends and the creative spirit....

Some highlights from the day...

Sidewalk chalk...

We re-did our banging wall. It is a little smaller, but you can attack it from 3 sides now, WAY more fun!

Giant bubbles (using this idea for inspiration). They didn't work super great, and I missed getting pics of the actual bubbles, but I love this idea. We just need to fiddle with the formula a bit since they popped as soon as they were released.

We had lots of good friends who came over, including some long time favorite people that came down from Denver and Boulder. AMAZING food (missed getting a shot of that also.. I was so distracted by all that was happening). I love having a potluck with people who care about food.. seriously yummy stuff!

And, of course, we did lots of painting!

This picture is one of the things I love most about doing art with kids. They mix up the colors so pretty almost every time. I could frame this colorful wonderfulness!

It was a really great afternoon.. thanks to all of you who came out! We are looking forward to next year!

Lisa, I LOVE IT! What an awesome idea! So it was a potluck -- were all the activities "just there" for kids to do at will, or was there a sort of form to the event? This is so cool!!! Did everyone contribute to the arts, or was this a LisaD Original? I am so lovin' it!

Yes, potluck, we had the grill on, told people to bring whatever they wanted and Don cooked it up. Good for him to play "King of the Grill" LOL..

We also made some tea and got some sodas.. people brought YUMMY YUMMY side dishes to share.. really good food.

We set up all the "art stations" but said if people were working on something or if they had a particular project in mind, to bring that along.

In the back yard, which is fenced and pretty kid proof, we set up the giant bubbles, the banging wall and just left that space for the kiddos to play.

In the front, where we set up tables to eat, we had a little station that had markers, crayons, paint, colored pencils, stuff to make collages (glue, magazines, etc) and paper. Then we have an outdoor paint table that we use for art projects. I set that up for the kids to paint on. Tape helps keep the paper in place.

I let the kids just go at it, but usually they need some "help" so I keep my eye on them and jump in to assist as needed. We also set up a place for Don to do some face painting, but he was the grill man so that never happened!

It was alot of fun! Next year I am for sure going to push the adults to get into making some art, noone did.. it was all kids, which is fine and fun, but our vision if for all of us to be able to get into and be creative.

Let me know if you end up doing one, they are a BLAST!
