hello winter!

Well, it's official.. winter is here. It is Colorado, so that means tomorrow we might have sun and warmth. But, it has been snowing on and off since Thanksgiving. So, that means (at least to me) that winter has finally arrived.

This morning, my son woke up and announced, "Mom, I HAVE to go out and play in the snow, RIGHT NOW!"

Off he went, practically skipping up the stairs...

Trying to get a taste of the white stuff...

Making snow angels.. I think he made like 15 of them!

Don't forget the obligatory snowman!

I am finding myself, more and more, being present to the seasons, to mother nature, to warmth and cold, wind, wetness, crisp air, and now a very certain chill. It is magical, the power of our earth changing and becoming something new...

Happy Winter everyone!!

learning something new!

One thing I really like about homeschooling is the opportunity to learn something new!

For instance, I had no idea that an owl ate it's food whole and then expelled a pellet of all the unused animal parts. That's what I learned at the zoo this past week! Oh, and E learned all about it as well...
The super awesome zoo lady, who is always amazing with the kids, let the boys take apart an owl pellet to see what they could find inside.

They found fur, bones and a whole mouse skull!

Way fun!!

beautiful november walks

It has been so nice around here this past week or so. It gets really chilly at night, but the days are so nice for walking..

On our nature hike this week, one of the best discoveries was an icy river... not frozen solid, alot of fun to make the ice go crunch and watching the water flow underneath the layer of ice.

And silly fun with one of E's little buddies...

Running...

Lots and lots of running through the woods...

Can you see the deer right behind Chubbas?? He just stood their watching the boys.
More running!

Oh, and climbing!

Such a fun day... I'm kind of excited to get some snow, but I'm enjoying the little last bits of fall.

the glass is half full

Yesterday, Don came home with news that the economic crisis has finally hit our household! He was laid off! Oooo-vay!!

Really, I should have seen it coming. His hours have been really sucky the past few weeks and when you live really simply (and pay check to pay check) in the first place, not getting 10 hours of overtime pay every week, is noticeable! But, I kept hoping it was just a dry spell...and, well, I hoped wrong!

So, now "we" are without a job! Ido have one wedding client I am working with, so I have a small (tiny) income coming in from that for a few months. And nothing in the hopper so to speak...

So, what are we to do??? Cry? Panic? Totally freak out?

Celebrate?

That is how I feel, like throwing a party. It is totally weird.

Yesterday, I wrote up on my "to-do" board this:

Create Magic!

And then this happens. And, it feels like a good thing. For so many reasons that I cannot even really explain. Like the universe needs this to happen to us right now and something wonderful is going to come of it. Like we were stuck and now we are unstuck, open to having life be a little more magical, fulfilling, and exciting...

I think we have been in a bit of a survival mode and not doing enough creating... Yeah, sure we've been crafting and creating "stuff" but this is different. You know the difference when you are really living and thriving in life, versus going through the motions and just surviving.

Well, time to start thriving again. I feel awake and happy and peaceful. I feel like we are creating magic!

made with love

After my crafting catch up post, Don asked where the pictures of the rocking horse were. I totally forgot!!! (I'm so bad.)

One of Boop's birthday presents was this ADORABLE rocking horse, made with love by Daddy!

He wood burned the mane and some other decorative features on it...
Pretty lucky little girl, if you ask me, to have a daddy who takes the time to make her something special just from him...
And here is a super sweet picture of the two of them together. He puts her to sleep every night and often gets lulled to never never land at the same time...
I love my husband so much!

nature friends

It has become so normal for us to have wild animals come by for a visit. I forget that lots of people don't get to see bears or deer right up close all the time. So, I have been really trying to be present when they come by and allow myself to be wowed.

The other day we had some sweet little deer hanging out in the yard. E and I hung out watching them out the window for awhile, totally amazed! Then Chubbas decided he wanted to go out and play with them, so off he went.

Of course, he scared them off, but it was fun watching him trying to sneak around and get close to them. He did end up only a few feet away while they were cautiously watching him to see what he would do. E just stood there quiet, talking to them.. "hello deer, do you want to play with me?"

And after they ran off, he stood at the fence, calling after them.. "here deer, here deer, come back!"

what i've been having for breakfast...

I've been feeling like I am seriously not eating enough greens lately. And with the weather a little more on the chilly side, a big salad just does not sound good. I've been reading a bit about the amazing benefits of starting your day with a green smoothie, so decided that I would give it a go!

What I've been doing is taking about 2 cups of water, 2 cups of fruit and 2 big handfuls of greens (spinach, kale, lettuce) and whizzing it up in my blender. It is so YUMMY!!!!

I've been doing it for a solid week now. Unfortunately, I don't have any amazing results to report. In fact, I ended up getting the kiddos' cold - times ten! I've decided it is just all the gunk getting out of my body so I am welcoming being sick, knowing that when I start feeling better, I will REALLY feel better!

So, here is to your health everyone...bottoms up!!

catching up.. some crafting

So while I had no camera, we had a birthday around here. I did take a couple of pictures with a disposable camera, but we'll see when (if ever) I get those developed!

But, I made a few things I wanted to show off! I am so loving sewing and making stuff these days!

First off is A's birthday crown, which she so cutely modeled for me this morning.

Here is the little dolly that I made for her. I think she came out really sweet! It was fun making and I look forward to making other dolls that become apart of our family in the future.

I also made our birthday girl some banner flags to decorate her celebration dinner. We'll bring these out every year so she knows it is her special day. I'll make some for E's next birthday as well.

Our little birthday princess shares a birthday with her cousin, who turned 3 this year. And I know that all 3 year olds need their own super hero cape, so that's what I made for him.

I have officially started out Christmas goodies for everyone this year. We are making everything so that what people get they know is made with love! Probably won't share alot of that until after Dec 25th!

oh pretty sky!

A shot of the full moon the other night..

And one of the sun coming up...

I wish I knew how to capture the full moon better.. it was so cool looking, all foggy and hazy out and no leaves on the trees. Spooky! I was creeping outside in the pitch black trying to take a picture and seriously thought a werewolf was going to get me!

my new craft room

I finally got my craft room put back together after our big room rearrange! It is SO much smaller, but it feels nice and cozy in here and I am happy that I miraculously found a home for everything! E has been spending lots of time making stuff and I am about to get cracking on our Christmas presents.

So a little tour for you...

An art wall with a mounted easel and a place for paintings to dry:Other side of the art wall:

E's "making stuff" desk:

All of our craft making supplies:
My sewing area and a nice little window to give us some light.

We anticipated this room change when we first moved in, that's part of why both rooms were painted orange. We just didn't know we were going to do it so soon. This is what we do, though! Seems we are always rearranging the furniture in our house. Both Don and I do it, so good thing we married each other! Never boring...

weekly art group - shaving cream painting

I didn't have the camera back from the repair shop last week, but we left all the paintings here to dry, so I snapped these pictures last night.
I've read about doing this and had wanted to try it with Chubbas, so decided to give it a go for our art group. What we did was spray a little mound of shaving cream on to each child's paper. Then we put a little washable poster paint on a paper plate, gave them a paint brush and let them have at it.

I thought for sure they would get totally messy using their hands, but they all stuck with using their paint brushes. All 4 kiddos were pretty silent enjoying the feel of the shaving cream and paint mixing together on the paper. I think this was the most captivating project they have done so far. They didn't paint for too long, but were really into it while they did.

I wish I could have gotten some pictures when they were first done, it was really pretty! After it dried a bit, the shaving cream lost some of it's foam, but still nice looking paintings...

Next time, I think I will scrape some of the shaving cream off before letting them get all the way dry. Some of their work came off when I scraped the dried up shaving cream off. And I think using paper with more bulk and texture will produce a better quality picture.

This is definitely a technique we will do again and again. After the kids left, I found myself digging in and making a few pictures of my own, it is so much fun!!

cuz we've been sick

Daddy made us some chicken noodle soup, with homemade noodles! E helped make the noodles...

The kids are starting to feel better and I am working hard to keep the tickle in my throat from growing into a full blown snot mess! Oh, joy!

in case you forgot...

what these two cute kiddos look like:

Yup, that's right.. My camera is fixed and back home! YAHOOO!!! And even better is that is was covered under warranty, so I only had to pay for shipping, gotta love that!

Lots more blogging coming your way...

so fun!

Halloween was SO MUCH FUN! Seriously. The evening just made me smile and still brings little giggles when I think about it. E decided to go as the magician and he was so adorable!! At every door, instead of saying "trick or treat" he said "happy halloween!" He was so excited and overwhelmed, running all over the place and yes.. he was running. To every house. At the doors he gave up trying to push the door bell, just said "ding dong." I don't think I have ever seen him so full of joy and enthusiasm. It was wonderfully sweet!

My aunt took some pictures (thank you!) for you all to enjoy...
